A few months ago California became the second state (Massachusetts being the other) to recognize same sex marriage when its Supreme court nullified a state ban on said legal relations. Come November elections, the issue will be again subject to a referendum via Proposition 8 (California Marriage Protection Act) to amend the State constitution. Proponents of the bill claim that it will override the recent court ruling.
Same sex marriage is legally recognized in Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain and Norway (2009).
And here are some interesting facts.
1990 – Year when the World Health Organization officially removed homosexuality from its list of disorders.
It is a crime in 75 countries worldwide.
It is punishable by death in certain countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Yemen, Mauritania and Sudan.
About 1,500 animal species are known to practice same-sex coupling, including bears, gorillas, flamingos, owls, salmon and many others.
And while homosexual acts are common in the animal kingdom homophobia is exclusive to human beings.
